Hello Kitty: Unskinned
April 2021
Alcohol-based markers, black acrylic paint
Hello Kitty is my comfort character since childhood, and she was one of the most formative symbols for my identity. In most contexts, she is presented cutely and happily, but in this illustration, I sought to portray who she is beyond her commercialized appearance. To demonstrate greater depth of character, I attempted to depict more human-like skin and facial features instead of cartoon cat organs. The overarching intention was to show that frivolous things can mean more than what is superficially perceived.
